What would happen if magic item chart turned upside down for 1st level PC's?

Other than by DM Fiat, saying that nobody but you wants these objects of mystical magical marvelousness ... how would there be no resale value on an item that makes you better at doing something?

Are you familiar with the amount of gold floating around in a primitive Norse society?

Those giants and fey would eat them for breakfast. Giants don't miss and could knock them out of the park without even trying. All the vorpalness in the world won't save a nude fighter from a handful of skirmishers with bows.

I think that's the interesting concept. It takes the "epic level" out of powerful magic items. Hit points may be the crux of the game that is crucial for power escalation rather than weapons..thoughts?

Heavens, whatever is this mysterious barter system of which you speak? :p

Just because your returns don't come in little yellow metal disc format doesn't change the fact of it being sold.

It would be an interesting balancing act. You'd have a lot of Paper Tiger syndrome to account for. Most enemies that they don't flatten immediately can drop them like a bad habit due to their low ac/hp.

I wouldn't turn it up to 11 like you're proposing. I'd also suggest looking at Iron Heroes as a character merit-over-magical geegaws fix.

I have nothing against the D&D system though. Iron Heroes is just another d20 variant that I don't have the time to learn and then try to coerce players into that belief system again.

I agree with you that they might be coveted..but it's not like PC's are walking around with a sword and T-shirt that say's,"Sure it's a +5 sword, but I'm a weakling, come take it." :)

If the game world does not have a modern, efficient, highly liquid market for extremely expensive, highly specialized "objects of mystical magical marvelousness", then the owners of such items could find that it costs almost as much to find a buyer and complete the transaction as the item "should" be worth.
