D&D 4E What's in the 4E Monster Manual?

First Post
Has someone written up a list of monsters which are confirmed to be in the 4E Monster Manual?

There are all sorts of hints and mentions scattered all over the 4E info page, but no simple list.

Someone was keeping a list over at the WotC 4e Monster Forum, but it appears that it was been lost in an avalanche of posts. Maybe we should all try to build our own list?

Smurfs
Gnomes
Dire Chickens
Jabberwockies
Pink Ponies
& Gelatinous Boobs

That is all I know so far. j/k… :D

Goblins, Gnolls, Gnomes, Trolls, & Treant-like Dryads are in it.

Mike Shea is reporting that there are 500 monsters in the first MM, even with variations of the same monster, that seems to be a lot.

I don't know what they're going to be, but apparently there are going to be 500 of 'em in the first Monster Manual.

edit: Scooped??!! Shrooooooommmmmmyyyy!

Just think if 40 monsters get 5 variations, thats still 300 monsters! Plus the 24 templates in the DMG. Monstery goodness....

In terms of sheer number and monster selection, I'm indifferent. I'm sure I'll be happy to work with whatever they come up with. What I'm really curious about/interested in is what kind of new rule info or other extra resources the MM will include. Do we know anything about this?

500!? On how many pages? Holographic data storage or what!? Or DIN A3 sized? (though that would be pretty cool, somehow!)

Not complaining... just wondering!

Cheers, LT.

There won't be over 500 monster entries in 288 pages, rather there will be 500+ stat blocks. Here's how it should work from what I understand.
  • Each monster entry will have 1-2 page spread. Some may have more.
  • Each entry will contain all the flavor text and than present stat blocks for the creature.
  • Some entries will have more advanced versions of the creature listed.
  • Some entries (like the orc entry) will have stats for various archetypes that fit the monster race.
  • Some entries will have different stats for the exact same creature. It might have a lower level stat block that is suitable for use in a solo encounter, a mid level stat block to use a normal monster, and a higher level stat block to use it as a minion.
