HA! Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I usually ended up spending the amount of time normally associated with a carefully constructed PC on a one time use Boss/BBEG to pose a challenge to my players. It was especially aggrivating when most of the players studied physics, higher maths, and had practically memorized any and every spell and their details a lot better than I ever could. A group of 5 lv14 PCs wiped out a village of lizardfolk in a few rounds with very carefully placed and executed spells. The BBEg in the village died from his Massive Damage save and thusly derailed the next 6 gaming sessions since he had a piece of plot information vital to the advancement of the plot. They were in awe as I sat there with a :| face after a few rounds of them rolling NOTHING BUT CIRTICAL HITS. It was as if I was receiving a messege from the Dice Gods that I was unworthy and should give up my gaming career as DM. I have never been so insulted and amazed at once. It was just terrible, but I got back at them. A forest full of angry druids and fey (because they practically set off a mini-Atom bomb on the village of SLEEPING lizardfolk) come after them. It took a two week down time to re-write some of the plot devices I had to alter the course of the game. ARGH. That's why I had tried to buy new sets of dice. I was afraid I had bought yet another cursed set. But if I handed them off to a player, they worked for them. Oooo, I was so angry. I spent over $200 on just DICE and they only work for others. I was so tempted to start haviung the players roll randomd rolls and take their results for my own, but I felt so guilty about it. *sigh*
