I don't know if this qualifies but I had an idea for a cosmology that I haven't yet been able to use in my game. Basically it is a closed cosmology where souls are recycled when they die. There is a "holy" plane where angels/celestials live. They live in constant war with the "unholy" realm residents and seek to protect mortal souls. The mortal world is exactly as you would expect and the holy forced protect the souls on the mortal world because they are week and can't fend of the demonic fiends. Fiends of course live in the unholy plane and try to kill as many mortal lives as possible as well as celestial so that celestials get recycled as mortals. You see, when a soul dies it doesn't move on.. but instead it transitions to be reborn on the next level. When mortals die their souls get reborn as demons, when demons die they are reborn as angels (thus why angels try to kill as many demons as possible on sight), and angels die and get reborn as mortals. It is a never ending struggle. Unfortunately the angels and demons are more or less equally matched in terms of power but the demons have more numbers. Every mortal soul that dies becomes a demon, and, unlike the "outsiders", mortals have limited lives and will die of old age at least. In this cosmology the angels are "good" certainly but it isn't through some quasi beneficence but instead due to the fact that killing mortals, even those who deserve it, only adds to the demonic hordes. Thoughts Matthias ?
