I think of WoT improves by accretion. Growing more a more impressive as the characters grow and develop. The World Building happens the same way. As the characters experiences reveal more about it. I struggle to see how the characters can be called uninteresting. You have…

Rand needs to unite the world that fears/hates him under his banner, while trying to master his powers and avoiding going mad.
Perrin can communicate with Wolves that treat him like a brother though he is hunted by the whitecloaks for it.
Matt can remember his past lives and the skills that brings him while being bound to a legendary magical artifact.
Egwene has been enslaved and forced to use the power much more strongly than is safe but escaped and is now left training with people much less powerful than she is. Leaving a burning hatred of the Seanchan.
Siuan Sanche is proud and steely, but left weakened by the argument by Moiraine and Rands Escape.
Three really strong 3D villains in Ishmael, Lanfear and Liandrin.
There are a host of other characters like Thom, Elaine, Nyneave etc that will get more screen time but they are all interesting.
Like I said in a previous thread, Magic in WoT has rules and the foundations have been laid that the high magic elements of the world can build apon. I think the series needs a map in it somehow. GoT has cornered the idea of opening credits but they need to see the world laid out I think so you can see how it fits together.
