I'd have taken that Barbarian level right off as it would have been more in keeping with my character concept, of an orphanced barbarian halfling raised by Gnomes (I was in a goofy mood, and beside the Lantaneese part was the DM's idea!) who's trained in the rigorous logic and dicipline of Wizardry yet still likes to 'let go' and 'get back to his roots' via his Barbarian ways. Those HP and that extra +10 base move (the meta-munchkin reason behind the levels) would really help in keeping him alive in the early levels, and it would have been more in keeping with a 'found in the woods and civilized' background.
Heh, this is something I've been unable to decide on for my own (Ghostwise) Halfling Wizard in the FR-based campain I play in. I keep saying I'm going to take a 'level or two' in Barbarian, yet I always feel the lure of that extra spell (ie: "O.o If I have just one more spell a day, then I'm set!" :D) or that next spell level (ie:"If I don't take Barbarian I'll have 3rd level spells, bwahaha..."), that sorta thing. Here I'd thought I was above the lure of magic.. yah right! :p Looking back now though (yah, my whole 4  levels) I'd probably do things differently. As it is I would have to go with a 'getting in touch wiht his ancestry' idea, not quite as clean and simple. Hatchling Dragon
