More on topic, one of my players came up with the usual "From an aristocratic background, family wiped out by dirty dogs, now the only remaining son vows vengeance" character backgrounds. So he had his dad down for executed on trumped-charges and I asked, "What about your mom?" He says, "Oh, well, she hasn't been seen since." Okay, so I think about that. I think about why someone would go to all the trouble to fake evidence, rig a trial etc, to put someone away. And make Mom disappear. So I decided (without telling him) that his mother's family were the holders of a terrible curse: the eldest member of the family is in fact a foul lycanthrope, a vicious were-leopard of incredible ferocity, who is traditionally kept in a pen in the dungeon of her family's castle. Mom gets taken away by the baddies who done in his father just because they're baddies and tormenting aristocratic ladies is what they do. Unfortunately for them, while they're holding her her family gets wiped out in a war back in her homeland. She's suddenly the eldest surviving family member, turns into super-were-leopard and kills all her guards, escapes and runs back to her family castle where she grew up. All this is unbeknowst to our hero, who shows a remarkable lack of interest in the whereabouts of his mother. I drop hints here and there that there's more going on with his background but no follow-up is forthcoming. Fine. Mom gets home and begins laying waste to the countryside until some folks find out the story and manage to pen her up. A message gets sent to the PC telling him his mother is found and unwell. He does not go to see her. Hey, she's a starving were-leopard. Nobody's about to let her out of her cell, now that they know what she is. So she dies. Guess who the next in line is? Suddenly, without warning, the PC turned into a big cat. Hee hee hee....
