[QUOTE="Sodalis, post: 108526, member: 1791"] why should they be able to start with a higher ECL than any other party member? If you are starting a game at lvl1, then there shoul be no reason for anyone to have a ecl higher than that. What buzzard is saying is that if you let someone be a 1/2 dragon 1/2 elf fighter 1, that person will be far more powerful than a lvl 1 fighter. It is not fair to have suchj a big disparity among the grup. If you are allowing templates and various races, then I would up the starting ECL to 3 or 4. taht way, a player can play differing races (with proper lvl adj) and a player that wants to play a core race/ class combo can without be overshadiowed by other players... i am with buzzard- if you are starting at lvl 1, then the ECl has to be set at +0- just to make it fair Edit_____________________ S'Mon, you are talking about EL (encounter lvl) and he is talking about ECl (effective character lvl) both different things. Encounter lvl is how hard an encounter is, so you as DM can gauge what is the proper challenge for the group. ECL is how powerful your character is compared to another character. In theory, all classes/race combo with teh same ECL should beat each other to death, with the winner narrowly escaping with his life... so a 1/2 dragon/ minotaur (+3 dragon, +8 minotaur)/ fighter 6 should be as powerful as a human cleric 17.
