Ah, a good friend once told me playing Chaotic evil is "Never having to say your sorry." And pretty much that is the way I have played it ever since. It seems to work perfectly fine. If I want to travel with the party I do. If I want something but will result in me having to kill the previous owner for it, I do. Why, because. The problem I have seen with Chaotic evil and Chaotic neutral is people play them as Chaotic stupid. You need to travel with a party because no gamemaster is going to run a game for you and a game for the party. So, you need alittle party cohesion, but you don't have to help the party if you feel they wouldn't have helped you in a situation. Personally, I find the hardest alignment to play as Lawful good. Lawful good means I always have to say I am sorry, and I must never break the rules. Heck, if my enemy surrenders it becomes my responsibility to care for him and his children. What, he is an orc and his tribe has surrendered to me! Bah, set up a reservation and make them live on it. That way they may become reformed and help society. Bah, wipe them out so they don't breed and come back to kill more fine citzens of the lands.
