Which City Do I Buy?

Okay, I know I want a "major city" to use in my homemade campaign world. Unfortunately, there are three good ones out there, and I only need one right now. I run a decently magic-heavy world. I like having a lot of NPCs already made, since I don't devote much time to making them, and often find myself making an NPC "on the fly". A good, detailed and easy to read map with lots of key areas detailed in the book would be WONDERFUL. I loved the old City of Greyhawk boxed set, so something along those lines.

Geanavue, Freeport, and Bluffside.

I prefer hardcover, but I prefer quality and detail even moreso.

I've never bought any Freeport or Bluffside products yet (though Bluffside only has one, right?), and I have a long standing relationship with Kenzer. (Hackmaster, KoDT, and the one Kalamar module I have is SUPERB)

So... which city should I buy?

What are you looking for in a city? All have thieir strengths. All are different. i don't have the Freeport modules or Interludes to Bluffside, either. Although, now that I have the city books, I've placed all of them on my to buy list.

My personal favorite is Bluffside. THe city just came to life more then the others when I read the book. It has a mystery built into the history. It is a few cities in one, and I like that. They took a chance to try something very different and it worked. I like to reward compaines that take that sort of chance.

There have been many other threads comparing the city books, you might want to try to find them.

Well, if you want to give your campaign an interesting twist, you should buy Hollowfaust, City of Necromancers. Its fully detailed with a complete history, code of laws, list of personalities, etc. as well as compaign ideas. Unlike most necromancers, these (for the most part) aren't "evil." It's an excellent way to freak out the PC's to have them be rescued by a patrol of guardian skeletons!

Try Stormhaven- City of a Thousand Seas

I wrote it for Mongoose publishing's Cities of Fantasy line. The book should hit stores this week or next.

64 pages of good stuff, including:

57 locations
LOTS of npcs
LOTS of adventure hooks
A pair of new spells
A couple new feats
A new were-template
maps
generic building templates

all for around 15$, less at Amazon!
:)

See two very positive reviews here: www.gamewyrd.com and www.dmshaven.freeservers.com

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I have Freeport and Bluffside. Based upon this:

I like having a lot of NPCs already made, since I don't devote much time to making them,

I would recommend Bluffside; pregen NPCs seems to be its major strength.

I've been reading over Bluffside and it's associated products recently and am very impressed. lots and lots of content crammed into it, all hung on a neat and very differnt concept.

From what I've seen it really does "breathe" if you know what I mean.

I have yet to see the Freeport campaign setting, but based on what I've heard from trusted sources (and based on Green Ronin's previous work) I expect it will rock.

Cool! "Stormhaven" has been the name of the primary city in my campaigne world since 1984! It's a grim and gritty place on the edge of civilization.

Again with the free plugs Mike! ;) You're making ME look bad. *thinks he might have to do some serious penance if this keeps up*

So Psion, will it be this week or next that we get your reviews of Stormhaven and Bluffside?

My own choice is Bluffside...but then I got Hal pulling my strings! ;)

In all seriousness, setting wise, Hollowfaust is my FAVORITE d20 city to date. It's DIFFERENT, but for portability, I think Bluffside has that beat. Doesn't mean I don't like Hollowfaust, cause it ROCKS!!! :)

*there gratious plug made! ;) *

I just started puting letters to the page on the Bluffside review... probably see it tonight.

I'm still digesting Stormhaven, but you should see it in a day or too. More excited about ED: Shamans; it may sneak ahead of Stormhaven.
