Which core books, in pdf, for rules content

darjr

I crit!
I want to reduce the number of books I carry around. I will use the compendium in game, but without rules I still need some of the books. Which ones? I'll get them in PDF to supplement the compendium.

BTW if your going to say the compendium needs to contain rules as well, I agree. I'd would pay more for it if it did.

The PHB is a no brainer. The DMG as well, I think. What else? AV for the vehicles and other rules?

PHB (main)

AV (I guess for mounts & alchemy)

DMG (for the encounter-building info an page 42).

Martial Power (rattling, invigorating, and ranger animal companions)

I'd go with the DM Screen, though I know that's not what you asked. I really haven't felt the need for books while DMing, as any player who might have a rules issue typically has the associated rulebook with them.

That is a good point. The screen is absolutely going with. It really is a great accessory, very sturdy and robust, but overall very light for its worth in game.

This list is good for around the table. We use them fairly often.

But for DMing, when away from the table, Open Grave has been awesome if you have an undead tinge to your game.

Yea, I think I have to get that one.

I guess what I mean is pdfs around the table. I'm going to get the hardbacks that I want as books, cuase I want books, cause I love books. But a lot of those will be for when I'm at home doing prep. I'll crib what I need from them.

I just look at the growing list of things I'm taking to games and I want to cut it down without really leaving anything I'll need.

Well if that's the case, then I bring all my PDFs with me on my laptop. I have bought most of the WOTC ones, especially the adventures, because I do a lot of copy/paste.

If you're asking what PDFs to get... that's tough, since I am a fan and collector. I buy a lot of RPG books so I get a lot of stuff that I only end up using a small fraction of...

But, Open Grave has some good stuff that you won't find on DDI's compendium. Manual of the Planes is the same. Lots of stuff not in the DDI.
