Upper Krust is of the opinion that you should be able to have meaningful interactions with beings as low as on half your ECL, and as much as four times your ECL, which covers the range from "Cannon Fodder" to "Uber Nemesis you are questing for the artifact which will enable Deus Ex Machina to save the day", so fighting ECL 1500 mages is reasonable for a party of four ECL 1000 characters. And St. Cuthbert is nowhere NEAR powerful enough for this party. He's well below Cannon Fodder level. Don't even bother for meaningful interactions. Nono. At ECL 1000, you're dealing with the Psuedonatural Plane. You're dealing with Primal Forces of the universe. Wanna take on the concept of death itself? How about someone trying to eradicate the very concept of Love itself? This is stuff that the gods your lesser creatures worship can't even think of touching. You might have to deal with some Oricalcum Golems (CR 1000 exactly) or perhaps Nuetronium Golems (CR 1181). It might be interesting to try dealing with the mage with the caster level of 2000 that it takes to make such monstrosities, which, incidentally, have a base fly (perfect) speed of 5,621,108,617 feet, which is slightly faster than the speed of light, and can deal 1000d6 blast damage in a 10,000 mile radius as a free action once per round, on top of a number of other abilites... The first ability block has the advantage that you might be able to retrieve your weapon from the super gravity that the golem produces (Strength Check, DC 158). On the other hand, a mere 1000d10-3000 (2500) hp is NOT going to cut it here, since it'll be doing 3500 damage to you a round in blast damage alone, not counting its full attack... and attacking it melee anyway is going to deal an average of 1750 damage to you per swing. Better to keep ranged, so you won't need that stupidly insane strength anyway, and might be able to survive a little longer.
