Which FR nations are available for invasion?

I'm hoping to run a campaign in which the players are resistants/insurgents in an occupied Forgotten Realms nation. My players are FR buffs, but it's been a while since I DMed for FR, so I need some help to make it congruent with all the politics.

Which FR realms would you say are ripe for invasion and occupation, and by whom? I can shift the age/era around.

Well there is a war going on in Amn. Couple of Ogre Mages has amassed an goblinoid/monster army and have conguered southern Amn.

Well in the 3E era, the nation that seems tailor made for your campaign idea is Unther, which is currently mostly under occupation by Mulhorand following the death of Gilgeam. The reamining free parts of Unther are being bolstered by aid from the Red Wizards, the Zhents (via the Church of Bane in Mourktar), the Church of Tiamat and the Cult of the Dragon. Almost every major evil power group in the Realms seems to be involved there to one extent or another. Perfect ground for a insurgent campaign.

Actually, my current campaign is of a very similar vein.

The actual war/invasion/etc hasn't happened yet, and won't for some time to come, but it's in the works.

In the end, it's going to boil down to Calimshan wanting to reestablish the Ten-Thousand Year Empire. Calimshan, along with Tashalar, Thindol, and Chult (yuan-ti connections~), and some of the southern city-states on the Lake of Steam, moving to take all the of the Lake of Steam, the unclaimed territory north of the LoS, Tethyr, Amn, and Lapaliiya.

Primary points of border conflict in the realms:
Moonsea (zhents) v. Dalelands
Hordelands (mongols) v. Rasehemen
Thay (Red Wizards) v. Aglarond/Rashemen
Unther (Dragon Queen) v. Chessenta/Mulhorond
Vassa (Witch King) v. Damara
Tethyr (Civil War) v. Tethyr
Menzoberranzan (Drow) v. Silver Marches
Citadel Adbar (Goblins) v. Silverymoon
City of Shade (Shadovar) v. Cormyr/Daleland/Westeheartlands/The North

So...no real conflict. :)

I've run "war scenarios" before in Moonsea v. Cormyr, Vassa v. Damara, and Thay v. Rashemen. All three were fun!

You could also have a hobgoblin invasion of Impiltur. With a bit of work you could use Red Hand of Doom as a key part of the campaign.

Calimshan was my first thought for an invader.

I'm trying to make it a city-based campaign, with various religious and political sects fighting the invaders and each other over the power vacuum. That means I need a metropolis to invade.

I've played some RHoD, and enjoyed it. Maybe I can increase the size of Brindol for the city.
