They're interesting books. I loved them as a child; when I reread them as an adult, their didacticism really turned me off. I wish I were better now at ignoring the Message in Message books; I wish I were still able to enjoy the Narnia chronicles.

Except for Horse & His Boy, which I was never able to finish. Magician's Nephew was always my favorite, followed closely by Prince Caspian; I like the darkness.

Horse and his Boy never felt like it was quite part of the series.

If I were doing the movies, I'd do Lion, Caspian, Treader, Chair, and Battle. Then if there was still a market for more Narnia among the fans, I'd do Nephew. And only come back to do Horse if there was real demand.

The Horse & His Boy is MY FAVORITE! (kind of)

The Silver Chair is easily the weakest of them all.

But MOST CERTIANLY start with the Lion the WItch & the Wardrobe - when I saw that re-numbered version I spit on them in the bookstore. ;)

D'oh! When I said I liked Prince Caspian as a kid the best, I really meant The Silver Chair. I'd just forgotten the title. Something about
the witch scenes in it, the hallucinatory smoke, the convincing the prince that he's insane
creeped me out in a way that I really liked.

I haven't reread it in a long time.

I agree. I liked how the Horse & His Boy gave a slightly 'outsider' persepective on Narnia. and yeah Silver Chair was a bit ummm...
