My first game group was a bunch of friends from high school. Didn't even know two of them until we started gaming together, then we became friends. This group dissolved a year or so after HS when one moved and the rest of us went off to college and/or careers. Played a few games for short periods of time in between here, but nothing clicked or lasted long, with the exception of a Star Fleet Battles group. I was introduced to my next D&D game group by a friend and played on and off with them for 12 years or so. This is the game group I can be seen mentioning (complaining about) in other threads. Started Beer and Pretzels, never grew or changed, while my needs and desires for gaming did. Fell apart in stages, as I fell out with the various friends. Oh well. Death (psychological or otherwise) needs to occur before new growth can come. Near the end of that run, I started playing with a group put together on-line. The GM closed down that group (9 players!) after about 6 sessions, because he didn't like playing with some of those people. Having barred one of those players from my house for trashing my couch, I can sympathize. I also started playing CoC with another group of people, introduced by the boyfriend of a friend of my (now ex-)wife. Introduced another long-time friend of my wife into that group, then lost the entire group in the divorce. Oh well. Got introduced into another group by the GM of the 9 player group I met on-line. Played with them for about a dozen sessions before deciding that their style didn't mesh with mine. Left (mostly) amicably, though I did register some complaints with the GM, who I felt was too bloodthirsty and unbalanced. Now playing with a new group, met on-line. We've played 3 sessions so far. Lost two of the five players after the last session, which is always a blow, but hey, they didn't want to go where the GM wanted to go, so it's their choice. We're adding two new players for our next session, which I'm hosting this Sunday. ++ As for the people who say that they only play with friends... Very few of the people I've played with were my friends before we started playing together. A number of them became my friends in the process of playing. One of the complaints people have in moving to Minnesota is that people are very nice (Minnesota Nice is a local cliche), but that we're too insular. Too cliquish, and it's hard to break into social groups. Don't live your life that way. Everyone who is your friend now was a stranger at some point in time.
