With me I'm less interested in the quality of graphics than I am the difference between "shot on location" Vs "shot against a green screen" and "being on set together Vs put together in post" What makes the environments feel real to me is the ability to interact with them. Especially on my terms - otherwise it's just green screens and Quicktime Events. And fundamentally the way to interact with environments on my terms is normally forced movement. If I can reasonably push that monster into a pit trap or riverwithout that being almost all I do then that pit trap or river is there. If not it's just green screen backdrop. On the other hand if my spell says something like 15' come on a battlemap that's great. It's clear and at least everyone is there. Likewise if my burning hands spell is one intended for Theatre of the Mind and says something like "3 targets within close range" that's fine. I can aim at who I'm going for. But if I have to ask the GM "how many people can I get in a 15 ft cone?" because we're using mapped distances I don't know what I'm aiming at and it makes being present harder as the GM CGIs it in in post. So yeah. I'm accusing 5e of being at best mediocre both ways. Lukewarm. Give me good one way or the other (and Daggerheart and Fate even manage to have interactable TotM environments that aren't quicktime events).
