I know they technically can't have children(?) but here is what I thought of. First off, the Deva that are part of this *family* have all come together long ago and decided to make an institution for training young clerics and the like of a specific god they worship (up to you). This has caused them to become very weathly in the city and they have gained a seat in the King's court. While they are true to their teachings, they still feel that they aren't doing enough to defeat evil and manage to learn of some purification ritual that prevent evil from ever infecting the land but uses the lives of the people in the city. The Deva wouldn't be too concerned since they could always a way back from offering themselves. You could have it that the PCs father was never a supporter of their god and got a bit nosy in trying to get some dirt on them and learned of this secret. That could explain his kidnapping.  For added fun, why not have a tiefling family that is trying to redeem itself and gets blamed for this. You could say that the Deva are doing so much for the kingdom while the Teiflings seem supicious and have an interesting conclusion especially if another one of the PCs worships the same god as the Devas.
