Who publishes short fantasy stories any more?

Question for any authors (published or not) out there:

As I've mentioned in a few other posts, I'm composing some books and short stories in the fantasy genre. The books are, frankly, hard work, but the short stories are pretty easy to put together. However, where can I actually distribute these stories? Are there any magazines or publishers who are interested in short stories, or should I just stick them on a website as a way of promoting my other writing and getting feedback?

The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction is the premier venue for stuff like this, although its fantasy is more Neil Gaiman and less Margaret Weiss. Realms of Fantasy is good for the latter.

Do a Google Search for "Black Gate" and "Heliotrope."

Both of them publish fantasy. (I've submitted to both myself, though with no luck so far.)

EN Publishing's moving (slowly) in that direction. Maybe not the circulation you're hoping for, though.

Also check out www.duotrope.com. More markets than you can shake a quill at.

Plenty of markets out there to try for before you go giving away your work for free. Just remember that rejection is part of the business. Keep the stories in the mail and they'll sell eventually. And keep writing. :)

If you want feedback, consider joining or creating a writer's group.
