Why aren't humans in the MM?

The "% of monsters" poll shows that lots of folks seem to assume they are. And lots of folks use them.

As the seemingly most diverse race, should they have an MM entry like dwarves and elves and halflings?

They always used to be in the MM didn't they? They used to have one of the largest entries, including tribesmen, nomads, bandit groups etc.

Wonder why they missed out such an obvious thing to carry over (and I wonder why I never really thought about it before!)

My initial reaction was a mild, "Hell no! We have the PHB and commoner/expert/aristocat in the DMG."

Then again, after looking at some of the crap stuff in the MM, maybe they should have used that space to detail out some humans.

I think it's to save space. There isn't really a standard human like there is with the other PC races, and the humans of various classes are all in the DMG anyway. A human entry in 3e stats would either be way too long to include various types as it did in 1e/2e, or it would fail to represent the diveresity that defines humans in 3e.

SHOULD they be?

Is there anything to be gained by their inclusion, given their voluminous presence in the PHB and DMG?

In my personal opinion, space shouldn't be wasted on ANY of the races already included in the PHB.

This is the truer question. Why aren't they there is other PHB races are. :)

Yes, there should be humans in the MM as encounters, properly listed & described Merchants, Adventurer Groups, Bandits/Pirates, Nomads, Pilgrims, Patrol Groups, Strongholds et al. Low, Medium & High EL groups, ideally (Low - 1-6 Nomads, High - 30-300 Nomads). It would certainly make my DMing a lot easier not to have to convert from my 1e MM!

I hink it would be better to just have an entire book with statted out NPC's, NPC's with templates, and animals/creatures with templates (to help out those Summoners who need to add the Celestial/Fiendish template to everything they summon...).

The book could have stock, low-level, mid-level, and high-level examples of all the character classes for each race, plus some 'heroic or unique' NPC's with templates or prestige classes.

I don't want tons of stat blocks, I _definitely_ don't want templates, I just want humans-as-encounters with suggestions of number appearing by class & level, like in 1e MM.
