When we play F20 games, we vastly prefer Level Up or OSE and can't wait for Dolmenwood to be released physically. I find reading 2024 grating. In my mind I'm reaching for a red editing pen, not to fix the grammar, but to untangle some of the sentences and vastly reduce the jargon. The conditions could be bolded to make it obvious they're game terms. The pendulum has definitely shifted to rules over rulings. Yes, of course, you can house rule but the writing has lost all semblance of that DIY flavour. It reads like WotC wants to nail down every little rule. Flavour and role playing is draining away. The traits, bonds, etc. have some issues in 2014 but they did really help flesh out your character. We have short tables in 2024, which have adjectives linked to high or low stats. I can't imagine that even new players will need help realizing a high Str.score could be described as burly. Removing the background customization option in a game that's all about imagination is baffling. I know it's in the DMG, but it's written for DMs to design and present as options for players. I hate the temporary growth of Goliaths and temporary dragonborn wings. Where is that coming from? Too gamey and I can be tolerant of game conceits. It is a small thing that I read that finalized my decision. I was skimming the item section and there it was--the book telling me I can take the utilize object action to tie a knot in string. Hey, this does feel good @Micah Sweet. 😂
