Why do NPC's get more gear than PC's...??

Granted, eventually the PC gets more, but for levels 1&2, the NPC's get a *lot* more wealth, and even lvl 3 they are a little ahead.

This will cause the PC's to have too much wealth if they are fighting NPC's.

Uh?

No way!
A Lvl 1 NPC has 300 gp.
A Lvl 1 PC starts with about 120 gp, by the time he reaches 2nd level, he has gained 900 gp (approximately 75 gp per encounter)
After 4 encounters, the PC has the same wealth as a Lvl 1 NPC.

A Lvl 2 NPC has 600 gp wealth... so I don't see how he is richer than a PC.

I'm looking at the DMG:

NPC gear value (p127):
900gp
2,000gp
2,500gp
3,300gp

PC gear value (p135):
(101gp)see below
900gp
2,700gp
5,400gp

Average PC starting gold (PHB p135)
BRB 100
BRD 100
CLR 125
DRD 50
FTR 150
MNK 12.5
PAL 150
RGR 150
ROG 125
SOR 75
WIZ 75

Total average (mean) 1st level PC starting wealth 101.14 gp

I have to admit: I'm really surprised. NPCs do start off with more wealth than PCs and I can't guess why.

Most npcs in my campaign have nowhere near the recommended wealth, especially if they are low level.

I find it hard to imagine a peasant with 100 gp, much less 1000 gp, in money and items.

Now, an npc fighter or wizard, on the other hand...

Well, the higher GP at creation could just be that we're assuming the NPC has been adventuring a while and is not at 0 Exp.

Other than that, I have no idea

Wow. I have a bone to pick with my DM. :)

IME low-level NPCs don't have nearly that much gear. I think the premise here is wrong - the question is, Does anyone use that table at 1st or 2nd level?

I use the same table for PCs & NPCs at all levels. Mostly it's the NPC wealth table, but it starts with:

Level 1 - standard (ca 100gp)
Level 2 - 300gp
Level 3 - 900 gp
Level 4 - 1800 gp
Level 5 - 3600 gp
