More that I want something similar to 4e's roles. In 4e, you likely wanted a [S]healer[/S] leader in your party. But that leader didn't have to be a cleric casting healing word or cure wounds. It could be a warlord shouting at you that you don't have time to bleed, or a bard playing soothing music, or an artificer shooting you with a syringe filled with a healing potion. Either one works. Let's look at Fabula Ultima, and use the Darkblade class as an example. They have the following skills (class abilities) available (the star/plus symbol followed by a number indicates that you can take that skill up to that many times, and "SL" in the descriptions indicate how many times you've taken it): So there are a total of 15 selectable things, if you count each level of a skill as a separate thing. You won't be able to take more than ten of these – once you hit level 10 in a class you have Mastered that class and get a special benefit but can't take any more levels in it. So one Darkblade might focus on Agony to heal when they hurt someone they care about (positive or negative), and Heart of Darkness to make sure they have a target for it. Another might focus on Shadow Strike to deal extra damage at the cost of their health. Or various other combinations. The game requires you to multiclass, giving you 5 levels at chargen to spread across 2 or 3 classes. There are several pages listing how to use this to create various archetypes, like so: The point is to have recognizable classes and yet offer a lot of flexibility in character creation. This is sort of similar to the d20 versions of Star Wars, where most classes mainly consisted of alternating bonus feats (from a class list) and class talents (selectable class features, often coming in chains), and in order to build the character you envisioned you were strongly encouraged to multi-class (e.g. Leia in episode VI is a level 8 Noble and a level 2 Soldier).
