Why I play. An essay by GorillaDaBouncer I play for many reasons. RPGs are interesting. I can be creative. It gives me something to do. I play so that I might not drop into a pit of dispair. Role playing games tend to be much more interesting then real life. That is, more interesting then a safe life. I've lived through plenty of excitement and risked my neck every inch of the way. But alas, my mother worries too much so I've toned it down. I enjoy being able to do some of the stuff in the games that I can't do in real life. I rarely play magic-users, mostly fighters, an occasional rogue or bard. None of which I can really be in real life. At least not in the same sense. Sure, I can be a fighter. But I'd get busted very quickly for carrying around a broadsword with me around town. A rogue, fun enough until I get arrested for grand theft auto or conning people out of their money. Or a bard. I play bass guitar among other things. I like to entertain. Making people laugh is one of the most important things I can think to do, but the whole juggling and performing stuff I have trouble with. And where else besides in a game can you travel to the center of a freshly created world and speak with the ancient wise-man that resides there? I enjoy being creative. I try to write, but I don't have the mentality for it. I have an avid imagination, which often causes me to miss important information in my schooling and makes my grades drop below where they should be. Gaming allows me to be creative, and write a story with the other players that can go anywhere we want it to. It doesn't even have to make sense. Just so long as we all contribute, it has been a success. Where else can that happen? Nowhere! At least nowhere I can find. Gaming gives me a way to toss out ideas that normally would just swirl around in my brain until they die. If I didn't game, I would spend all of my time doing mostly activites that to me just seem like a waste of time. Before I started gaming, I watched a lot of TV. I mean, a lot of TV. Like, 7-9 hours a day during the summer. That wasn't including movies. Now that I game, it's sparked new interests like writing, boxing (interestlingly enough, it came from just wanting to do something like my characters do), ect. Without gaming, I would probably still be watching way too much TV and wasting my life away more then I'm doing now. So in conclusion, I game for the sake of not rotting my brain to death with trash. Plus it's fun. Lots and lots and lots of fun. (Not the best essay, but it should suffice, eh?)
