When I want to play something that isn't D&D, I use the rules from a game that isn't D&D. I prefer Marvel Heroic Roleplaying (or similar Cortex builds) for superheroes, whether they're Marvel or not. (They're usually Marvel.) I run Barbarians of Lemuria when I have two or three hours for a pickup game. There are games that Alternity (1998) does better than anything else, including some flavors of "D&D fantasy". I run Street Fighter: the Storytelling Game because I love the system and the setting, and no other system really works for the setting. When I want to run furries in a retro cyberpunk dystopia, I have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness.I could... run most of those using D&D or some variant of D&D. I could gin up a version of D&D that does most of those things. But that would produce worse games than using the right rulesets for the game I'm trying to play, for a lot of unnecessary work.</blockquote>
