I wouldn't use Middle Earth, but even in the stories, Gandalf didn't tend to swoop in. As for Star Wars, I think the Empire is like 10,000 light-years across; the sheer size of the thing means that even a world-destroying adventure is not noticeable on the full thing; I don't know what the speed of spaceships is in Star Wars, but it's likely they simply couldn't get there before the adventure was over. In Die Hard, there's no reason to think John McClane is a high-level character in the setting. He just happens to be the man on the scene, and nobody else in the universe can get there to solve the problem. Stick Die Hard in the MCU, however, and then you have a number of characters that could easily insert themselves into the situation. Travel where people can get to the problem in minutes or hours, like jets or superflight or teleportation, can change a setting massively, and the fact that high level magic users can teleport to a problem matters. Even if they won't, I'd still wonder why I was playing John McClane in a setting where what he was doing was so minor that no hero could be bothered to respond to it (note in the real world, Die Hard would arguably be the most dramatic criminal act to happen on US soil since 9/11). The Middle Earth material is really five books, maybe a couple more depending on what you consider canon. If we're counting core "canon" Star Wars, it's like seven movies and a TV series. And yeah, I'm pretty sure that some groups have been scared off from doing Star Wars by that guy who has read all the Extended Universe material and thinks it all matters. I don't see anyone here universalizing; the fact that we don't find FR a setting we want to play in does not mean that nobody can.
