I never hated the Realms, actually looked forward to discovering more about the setting, but... ended up tiring of it - quickly. i.m.o. WotC did a disservice to all the settings with 5e, though I understand how they came to where they are at. I started playing D&D with 5e after being introduced to Eberron's Xendrik, through DDO. For some reason I thought that Eberron was the default world, and found out quickly its the multiverse, which is cooler. At least, that is how I interpreted, incorrectly, the DMG! ;) PoTA was my first campaign, and it gave minimum suggestions for where to place it in Eberron. Not knowing about the world past DDO and Keiths, 300+ page blog, (the latter came later), I was at a loss with converting PotA properly, so played Realms - until the elemental campaign lent itself easily to the development of lightning rails, at 15th level, in Red Larch. (Town grew...) :) I really wanted Eberron setting material, not 3.5 - and waited, and waited. Thought it would come at various points, and now its clear 5e is Realms. All other material is being poured into the Realms, from Greyhawk, etc. Eberrons cosmology is truly awesome - but kinda doesnt fit 5e anymore. They would have had to have started with Eberron - which many fans are happy they didnt, as they would prefer Keith having complete control in the DMsGuild. Having said that, its the reason Realms was not that interesting. Only had SCAG... even then, no Baldurs Gate - really not into the cold north. WotC would have new people buy 3.5 as veterans of the game would not appreciate repeat material... ... Thats where they messed up, years ago - settings should have been edition neutral like Elminsters guide. A new player does not want 3.5 stats, etc. So many cool feats, trying to figure out how to use them without breaking the game, etc. The 'hate' is probably really based on the above. I would not mind seeing their multiverse - updated to 5e. They could update the old books as they are .pdfs. Thats one other thing... try getting hardback copies of Eberron. :p Or Realms... tons of realms books I would gladly get. :) Realms is how they started 5e to be safe - the fans were the tender that ignited the flame that WotCs hollywood crowd is stoking, and it can be any setting. New people got on board because exposure, not because the Realms is necessarily that interesting... not saying its not, but every adventure that has come out could easily fit in another setting, like Eberron, etc.
