Why is it....?

Why can a CR 1/2 orc roll a twenty, roll another twenty to determine if was a Critical hit, and proceed to roll 11, 12, and 11 + 9 for strength for dammage (43 points to a 2nd level elf), but when I have a CR 5 NPC facing a 3rd level party (that had already been in combat, and still had a couple other foes about) he can't roll over a 6 to hit?

Sigh.

Sorry about the run-on sentence, I just needed to vent.

an NPC can do whatever kind of damage you want it to. Its just a matter of how strong is he? how much you want his powers to be realistic? or just a damage dealing machine...

hell, you can have a lvl 2 npc that found the sword of holy bane and deals 20D20 per swing. And every hit is enchanted with true strike, paralyzes, and is a brilliant blade that deals all three types (pierce, slash, and bludgeon) on a successful hit. Crit range is 10*10.

and that is just a lvl 2 NPC, wait tile he lvls up to lvl 3...
:D
