D&D General Why isn't there a spellcasting ability ?

Well, in 5E, there are several... Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma... ;)

Heck, I think Constitution might even be used by a creature or something. 🤷‍♂️

D&D is a funny game in that it has been around for almost 50 years, and there's been tons of developments since then, but a large portion of it remains sacrosanct (for better or worse). Like the six ability scores. I mean, even the name is inaccurate - they are really more attributes or aptitudes.

Meaning, the reason there isn't a magic-oriented ability score is probably just tradition. Rather than add or subtract (except for the brief and weird Comeliness foray), TSR and WotC have simply adapted what the ability scores mean - and what they apply to.

Not sure how I'd do it different if designing D&D today, but if designing a game from scratch, I might do away with ability scores altogether and just have skills, with players assigning "Aptitude" bonuses at creation, which are basically natural talent.

Talislanta has both a Magic Rating and a Combat Rating, with the eight attributes applying more to other skills. I liked this, because it recognized that one's skill in combat was based on a wide variety of attributes, and also that you could be really smart but lack any magic sensitivity.

Creating a 7th stat for spellcasters would demand they put their best stat there at the expense of their other stats because it would likely be that, like Constitution, very few if any skills would be tied to it.

That's how The Troubleshooters does it, and it seems to work well there. Though I'm not sure what you mean with Aptitude bonuses – skills in The Troubleshooters are basically completely independent of one another (though there are Abilities (basically feats) you can get that let you use skill X instead of skill Y in circumstance Z, like Called to the Bar among other things letting you use Red Tape instead of Contacts to get in touch with law-related people).
