They often suggest not overloading the number of soldiers and brutes for instance.  There are also ideas give for making more interesting monsters -- but not more complex or difficult -- in order to make a long combat more interesting. Also I believe there are suggestions about reducing the number of hit points for certain types of monsters. Maybe someone else has page references.
