[QUOTE="Tyler Do'Urden, post: 3742916, member: 4601"] Okay, time for a drow defender to jump into the fray. First off, in defense of Drizz't... I don't know where the notion that Drizz't is some sort of brooding emo-boy got started; I've read most of the novels (admittedly when I was in college, not high school), and never got that vibe off the character at all. Drizz't seemed more the quiet, rugged individualist than the whiny emo-boy... the Drow equivalent of the whiny emo-boy would never have the guts to move out of his matron mother's house, would be servile and cowardly, a self-loathing Chaotic Evil too weak to ever strike out on his own and leave behind his upbringing. Likewise, Drizz't is hardly a clone of Elric; Drizz't is a reversal of Elric. Elric was a decadent, weak, evil sorcerer living in a corrupt, decadent society; Drizz't lived in such a society, and chose to reject it in favor of a lonely, hard life. Drizz't is more Aragorn than Elric. Likewise, I've played three drow characters in both 2nd edition and 3rd. While 3e Drow can be a challenge against some encounters (hey, there's a reason Drizz't adventures with a beefy barbarian- somebody has to soak all that damage!), they're extremely potent in others. Drow rogue-types can be especially effective. That, and on-paper, theoretical balance is one thing- actual in-play balance is entirely different, and always dependent on the DM's style. I, for one, hope that Drow are included as a playable sub-race in the 4th edition player's handbook; not as a race with entirely different stat modifications and powers, but as one permutation of "elf", along with the others.
