This thread makes me laugh. Just about any ruleset can be run and played so poorly that it feels like a different system. Slap a D&D mentality on the GM and/or the Players and the system won't "save" the game from feeling like D&D. Slap the proper mentality on the GM & the Players and mechanics begin to fade away into the background. Heck, I've only been playing for 23+ years. I have seen a lot of game systems come and go, but I certainly have not seen all of them. There are a few gems in different systems out there that work magnificently for the game they were designed around. There are also a lot of mediocre to bad to crappy game systems that still had a good game concept at the core. There are a lot of games that would have seen more exposure if the mechanics weren't so bad. Dead, D&D != D20. D&D sits atop the D20 engine, and it D&D was obviously a driving influence on the system. Still, D20 can be much different than D&D, if that effort is put forth. As well, the differences between the D20stl and something like the OGL create even more variety, yet still use many of the D20 mechanics. You are trying to equate some games that are OGL with D&D and I am not sure you have really looked at the system differences. You seem to be focusing on the similarities. Still, they are just games and anyone is free to use their own unique ruleset if they think it will suit the game better and make them money. As for your assertions that "we love D&D but hate d20", I am obviously not in your "we" group.
