To clarify a little, I was just referencing specifically what 1E says about Alchemists making potions (which is just assisting with it). They're also mentioned as selling various spell components, and defined on page 29 as handling "the compounding of magical substances". Their fee structure for employment is also a bit different- a base rate of 300gp/month, plus you'll need to offer a bonus of 10-100gp, a well-stocked lab for them to work in (setup costs of 200-1,000gp, and a min monthly maint cost of 10% of the setup cost), plus a minimum assurance of at least a year's employment to attract one to service. Did you ever see the 1991 OVA based on the first game? OD&D Clerics were forced to choose Law or Chaos by 7th level (Men & Magic p7), but most of that class interaction/alignment restriction stuff you've mentioned was emulating 1E AD&D, which imposed such restrictions primarily on Paladins and Rangers. Clerics are forbidden to be True Neutral in AD&D, right from 1st level. (In B/X there was no restriction. In BECMI as well they could be any of the three alignments, but the Companion set introduced the option to become a Druid if you were Neutral and at least 9th level.)
