Wild Mage

Yeah, at least one third party company has done a book on wild magic- I don't know how they compare to the old 2e wild mage, though; I don't have any of them. :(

I think the Escalation Mage from Faiths of Eberron does a good job of tapping barely-controlled magic. They don't do random magical effects as much as a wild mage, though.

I was pretty disappointed with the 3.5 wild mage myself. If you really want to do the Wild Mage class justice, get yourself an old 2.0 Tome of Magic, and see if your DM would let you convert the Wild Mage within to be playable in 3.x. You wouldn't need to do a whole lot since the variable caster level mechanic is already done with the new version. Just throw in a % chance for wild surge, photocopy the surge table (don't use the one for the Rod of Wonder, it's lame) and the wild magic spells, and you're golden.

I think Bryntryst hit the nail on the head. That's just what I would do if I was going to play a Wild Mage. Great advice!

Actually, on closer inspection I rather like the 3.5 Wild Mage...I just wish you didn't have to wait till 14th (minimum) character level to get to Reckless Dweomer, since most all of my friends run low level games.

I might talk to my DM about adding more choices to the Rod of Wonder though, give it a 1-for-1 on a d100.
