From a player's perspective... I'd want to go with the 3.5 version.

Changing into the Animal type (dire Bear) and casting Animal Growth, Nature's Favor, Glory of the Beast on myself, and wading into combat just paints a wonderful picture... :D

YMMV

much as I love to have people awaken themselves ;/ I am going to go with masters of the wild. My old druid character would never be the same without his sprint ability :(

Hear, hear! That sprint ability came in handy chasing down a thief once.

I like much of what 3.5 did with Wildshape, but I still think the MotW version is a little better.

Masters of the Wild basically said, "When you become an animal, you become an animal. Everything about that animal, you get. But you're not a person any longer, so you don't use equipment."

3.5 basically says, "Hey, haven't you always wanted to be a furry? Well, now you can be one! Dress up in your favorite critter costume -- sure, you won't get the creature's abilities, but you'll still get to use all your cool human toys!"

I'll leave it to you which version I prefer.

3.5, although I'm inclined only to allow rings, amulets and perhaps cloaks to be worn by some animal forms. An ape is the only exception because of its human-like body.

MotW: they finally separated it from the mess that is the polymorph spells and it was useful for things other then combat.

They got it right, then they took a step back and messed it up

I wouldn't say that MotW got it right - the ability to get the Spell-like abilities of creatures of the elemental type was never a good idea once the concept of the Elemental versions of other creatures was introduced.

Of course, 3.5 didn't actually fix that loop-hole, so I'd be inclined to say that the MotW version is the best it has gotten so far.

I mean, in the 3rd edition and 3.5 versions we got contradictory answers on how many attacks a Druid in bear form gets. I mean, that's the basic thing right there and it's not even an answerable question in the 3.5 rulesset.
