Winning Races: Genasi of Athas

Very solid article. Pretty much exactly what I'd want from a Winning Races article, and not too short!

Genasi are one of 4e's success stories, and it shows.

Would that every race had that level of customizability!

I wish that they'd have Essentiallized Genasi, granting the other +2 to an ability score...

There's also a few racial items that are far too fiddly for me (+4 racial bonus to Acrobatics checks and Athletics checks made when taking the escape action, or the Sun Flare racial power) and there are a few errors (like the +2/+4/+6 on the aforementioned racial power, when all recent racials are one higher)

That said, the article was very long at 8 pages, there was crunch (incl a new PP, which lets you use Windwalker racial at will...nice) and some pretty good fluff.

I'd give it 8/10

I read somewhere the article includes a racial paragon path and it powers use Str, Int or Con. Maybe we are lucky and the Genasi will become the fables 2nd con / int race. Or maybe just the Xth Str / Con...

Yeah, I'd like to see that, but I highly doubt it. For some reason they (designers) think that stat combo is OP'd as opposed to the Str/Con combo which has a million or so races with this pairing. It's funny that Shielding Swordmages, Summoner Wizards and (I think) Artificers are the only classes without a race that boosts their primary and secondary attributes. There are actually no Con/Int races, just a monster race that can be playable (and has 0 support).

Str/Dex is another one (only Half-orc)

Dark Sun gave us the Thri-Kreen. At least that combo has 2 races now.

I'm a pretty big fan of Genasi and like this article quite a bit. I do wish that Abyssal Genasi were supported with the PP, but we can't have everything.

Seeing Genasi come around as an Int/Con race would be fantastic. I'm not going to hold my breath, but it would be pretty sweet.

I liked this article. Genasi are a neat race mechanically, even if I hate all the art that has been produced for them.

Int + Str/Con seems ideal for them, and it would be swell to see. I don't know why Int+Con is considered to be OP by the designers if that statement is true.

I also felt that Elves should have got Dex + Str/Wis as a choice, while we're on the subject of rare stat mod combinations. Int, for them, I feel was not a good choice.

Getting back on topic, this was a good Winning Races article. We may be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with respect to the quality of magazine articles. I'm hopeful.

In general the article is fine, features and feats rank between somewhat underwhelming (like the +2 to ongoing stuff, why not resist?) and somewhat useful, except the PP's 16th level feature for windsoul.

At-will Windwalker is screaming for abuse. A genasi Wizard practically gains +1 attack +4/6 damage with Elemental Echo every round. Swiftwinds gives you at will movement free of opportunity attacks, every round. Manifest Healing gives you at will 15/20 THP every round you have a move action to spare if you have second manifestation (10/15 if you don't, which is still pretty good). A warden with that and Buffeting Winds would be c-r-a-z-y.

I'm all for more powerful options because I think a lot of dragon content lately has been in the somewhat underwhelming category, but while the PP isn't by itself a mega hit, this one feature is a bit over the top. Perhaps windwalking twice per encounter would be more reasonable (and still quite good).
