Wizard spell scribing costs???

The spells that a wizard gets free at every level, is he still supposed to pay to scibe them into his spell book at the standard cost. 100 gp per page. 2 pages per spell level. In my campaign I have a player who just attained 9th level, and just got his 2 new 5th level spells and at the formula the cost would be 2,000 gp.
((5*2)+(5*2))100gp = 2000 gp

Just need clarification.

We allow him to get this for free becasue of the expense of it all. I think so far the Wizard has been responsible for spending about 70% of the total funds the party has had.

I would think they'd get it for free...to keep them balanced with every other spell casting class who doesn't have to purchase what spells they know.

Sadly not my idea, I just use the optional rules provided in the PHB for gaining spells...

By the rules, there is no cost incurred in either time or money for the two "free" spells the Wizard gains each level.

I'll save you my personal rant (and house rules) on the illogic of the wizard scribing rules that are my personal rules pet peeve.

Yep, the two spells are free. Free! Free of money, time and any other cost (they still use up pages in the book, of course )!
