Wizards 2 free spells ? and Specialization

First Post
Lets say I'm a 5th level Evoker, and I have all the PHB evokation spells of level 1-3 in my spellbook, and I gain level 6 in Evoker, and I get my 2 free spells but one has to be an evokation spell... what happens?

This came up with my Evoker a few months back, and I'm just curious, what should be done?

Where does it say your two free spells have to be your specialist school? I've been doing those way wrong if that's what it's supposed to be... (and I'm not even the DM)

You do not have to choose both as from your specialist school, but at least one.

Options:
1) you persuade your DM to allow you an evocation spell from another source than the PHB
2) you kick yourself in the head for not planning your character a bit more wisely. Since the sage replied that you must take a lower level spell if the current level is all selected, I would extrapolate that this means you just don't get the spell.

You are talking about fringe cases of the rules here though, and the DM might be lenient. (the rule is there so that specialist are actually that - specialist - that character seems specialised enough to gain two transmutation spells IMHO)

1 of the 2 must be (CH 10: Magic page 155 PHB) under Spells gained at a new level.

And as I said in my 1st post, one of the two...

Yes I know its a fringe case :)

I was lucky that my DM at that time was very lenient in this case. He let me choose a 4th level spell, even though I couldn't cast it. I can't remember if he made me pay the difference of price in gold or not, but it seems fair that way.

Some of the scolls we found, and some I had bought or had when I started the charecter.

As others have stated, only one of your two spells must be from your specialist school.

I would have had the person pick a lower level spell.

This can easily come up with some specializations, such as Divination or Necromancy. There are only 2 divination spells in the PHB at 3rd and 7th level. There is only one at 8th and 9th level.
On the other hand, I would allow selection of spells from some other sources such as Tome & Blood.

You missed the point where it was stated that each and every spells from that school from 0th to 3rd level were already in the spellbook.

I would allow from another source or I would create a new spell.

I had not missed it.

As stated, I may allow selection from another source. Failing that, no spell.

I would not allow free research of a custom spell. If a player wants to create a new spell, they have to pay the research costs.

If someone already has every lower level spell in existence, they aren't in desparate need of one more spell.

Sorry, I missread your post.

I would not penalize a specialist wizard who took all the spells he could on his list. Before having him pick only one spell, I would have him pick too spells of another source. That's the line IMO where the rules become a guideline and could be crossed.
