Wizards Gaining Two Spells When Gaining a Level - How do you do it?

Hi Everyone,

Was just wondering how you guys play a Wizard learning his/her two new spells when gaining a level. Are they:
- Something that the wizard has been working on and so when a level is gained, the work all comes together at that moment and thus they can be learned?
- Something that the wizard has the ability to cast once they write it into their spellbook?

Just curious on how other people out there play it?

Best Regards
Herremann the Wise

PS: Pogre has suggested that I try to start pimping my Story Hour a little bit more. So, if you're reading this and have a spare moment or two, follow the link in my signature. I've made a couple of updates in the last week that some people really seem to like. Hope to see you over there. Best regards once more.

My take?

It's something the Wizard has been working on for a while, and has been sketching out in the spellbook, but just then gets around to actually finishing. By one view of the text, the wizard can't get the spells until the wizard gets some between-adventure time (search through for the phrase "ongoing research", and you should find it fairly readily - I'm too lazy at the moment). The spell is "known" immediately on getting the level, but can't be used (prepared) until the mage finishes putting it down on paper (included in the time spent resting/preparing spells).

Our group may not be like most others in that we do not actually gain levels until we get into a settlement where we have some base of operations. From a role playing view this makes sense as it provides a reason as to why you gain power immediatley. Its an interesting way of doing things I think. The wizard in our group, upon leveling up and returning to our home town, will seek out her mentor and learn her spells.

That is the way we play it.

You have a spontaneous moment of clarity, a moment of inspiration, sit down, and sketch out two powerful new formulae in your spellbook, which will now be ready for memorization and casting at your leisure.

Something the wizard has researched during the past level and has just recently finished. The new spells are added to the spellbook and can be used immediately. The time is assumed to have been spent on this already.

I picture it as how I finally got trig. I woke up one morning and it all started making sense to me.

Besides, while I'm all for vermisillitude, I'm willing to gloss over some of it for the sake of enjoyable game play. Rogues don't have to take a week off to go study anatmony charts to gain more sneak attack damage, Fighters don't have to take a week off to increase their BAB or pick up their next feat, so why make the wizards suffer. They suffer enough being all nerdy and feeble.

This is how I do it. And since there's usually plenty of downtime between adventures in my games, it hardly breaks believability.

That's how we play it.
