I judge a book 80% on its contents, and only about 20% by art and "production values". There are LOTS of full color Wizards books that are crap (Planar Handbook, Weapons of Legacy, Champions of Ruin, most of the Races of ... and Complete ...), while some incredible B&W 3rd party books are overlooked because they aren't as fancy. The books I've read that surpass the Wizards stuff are: Midnight 2E, and whole Midnight line Darwin's World 2nd Spycraft 2.0 Iron Heroes Book of the Righteous Book of Fiends Conan OGL Atlanten Edition Player's Guide to Arcanis, and most Arcanis supplements Tome of Horrors II A lot of FFG's Legends & Lairs line (Wildscape, Path of ... series, Iron Kingdoms books Non-D20 Warhammer Fantasy Role Play 2nd knocks the socks off anything else out there! A beautiful book, incredible art, and very enjoyable read. The Old World Bestiary is also gorgeous, and incredibly useful for establishing atmosphere. I'm really looking forward to Heirs of Sigmar too. Deadlands Classic was a great game with incredible world depth and atmosphere. The art was generally very good too, and while pulpy, also eerie. I loved how they split the books into a general knowledge section (via the Tombstone Epitaph panphlets), and the GM's section with what was really going on behind the scenes.
