My own opinion is WotC's goal isn't so much to sell physical books but to recovering brand-power for the settings and earning mainly thanks DM-Guild. Like this the risk is lower. They are too busy creating adventures, monsters and crunch, avoiding possible controversies about changes in the setting. WotC is not going to publish a true DS book but more a generic post-apocalipse setting with some chapter about DS, and this will be unlocked in DM-Guild. Other possibility is Gamma-World being also unlocked in DM-Guild. And what about the firearms and advanced tech? That would be the business by 3PPs. This would be a fictional world, to can add magic and fantasy species, but also to avoid possible controversies about our real world. * Other idea is some "fallen" champions of Rajaat were enoughly smart a contingency plan in case something happened to them and when they died they could return to the life in a secret vault. * A spin-off of DS could be a spiritual successor of Jakandor. * Do you like the idea of a "haruspex" subclass? It like the biopunk cousin of the necromancer, close to a lifeshaper artificer. Do you remember the prestige class "fleshwarper" from "Lords of Madness: Book of Abominations"? * How would be the DS version of the plane of the mirrors? Or maybe the plane of dreams was more "interactive" in Athas due the psionic powers. And the "dream realms" were the home of Athasian gem dragonborns.
