Wolf Creek - based on true story?

I saw a preview to this horror movie that coming out at Christmas (why??) and it claims to be based on a true story. Now, in the past many other horror films have also made this claim and frankly I found their claims to be well exagerated. So, anyone know the true story on which this film is based?

According to IMDB,

Based on the infamous "Backpacker Murders" committed along the Hume Highway by Ivan Milat between 1989 and 1992.

To elaborate, Wolf Creek isn't strictly based upon any particular incident. In Australia it was billed as being "inspired by actual events". In this case, its the Backpacker Murders commited by Ivan Milat, and bears more than a passing resemblance to the abudction and murder of Peter Falconio in the NT.

Its a good movie I reckon, but as graphic and as brutal as they come. Audition didn't make me feel as sick as this film did.

Your original question has been answered, but I'd just like to reccommend the film wholeheartedly. The cinematography is great and the acting is a cut or three above what you'd expect in a horror film. It's pretty damn grisly though, and I actually had to walk out at one stage, though I am a big girl's blouse when it comes to such things.
