Women to skate after Clarkson Cup

Canadian Press

9/14/2005 2:49:49 PM

OTTAWA (CP) - Adrienne Clarkson is hoping to do for women's hockey what Lord Stanley did for the men's game.

The Governor General has announced the creation of the Clarkson Cup to honour excellence in Canadian women's hockey.

Clarkson says she wants to follow the lead of her predecessor, Lord Stanley, who created the Stanley Cup.

She says the idea sprung from the growing interest and respect of Canadians for women's hockey.

Beth Biggs, a senior instructor of the Fine Arts and Craft Program of the Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit, has been commissioned to create the trophy.

It's expected to be ready by May.

While it's cool that women get their own "Stanley Cup", how full of herself our GG is. Clarkson Cup. Oh brother. Even the Stanley Cup wasn't called the Stanley Cup when Lord Stanley created it.

I only know what is in what I've posted above.

Fair enough.

Agamon: But she's the Governor General!!! She's like important and stuff! I guess it's one way to create a legacy... :p

Yeah, usually that's an honor that's bestowed on you by others, not one you bestow on yourself.

Now, all we need to know is who will be skating for this prodigious award...

Strangely, lover of tradition that I am, I have no problem with Mrs Clarkson's plan.

I mean, if she doesn't do something like this, then who does? Who has a better claim?

I think it's a damn nice gesture. I hope it becoms a world-class tournament akin to the men "World Cup"...national Teams in a bi-yearly (ish) tourney.

If a National Women's league ever gets in place (and it likley won't, but still...) moving the Clarkson Cup over as the "Big Prize" ther would be a no-brainer.

What I wouldn't like to see is for it to become something uniquely Canadian.

Thanks for handing us the Gold Medal :) Cammi Granato was your team's backbone, it's heart and it's soul.

My love for Cammi know no limit, and it pains me greatly, but I think Ben Smith made a gutsy call. This means Turin will be about hockey and not the distraction of a victory lap, even a hugely well-deserved one.

That Sarah Parsons kid looks pretty good, plus we still have 18 or 19 players on the roster from the squad that won gold at the WC this year. :)

Hopefully they'll take what they learned in Finland last week and turn it into motivation for the pre-OLY tour.

Hey, maybe we could get her over to the Canadian team by offering her citizenship. It would be nice to get a little revenge for guys like Brett Hull, Bryan Trottier et all.

Sometimes you just need new blood and to give younger players their shot. Lotsa talented women coming up through the college ranks, these days.

Hell, the Red Sox only won the WS after cutting Nomar, who was often thought of as a fixture on that team.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see. :)
