Worlds Largest City - Mistake?

Hey folks,

I've just learned that the new AEG follow up product to the Worlds Largest Dungeon (WLD) which is going to be called the Worlds Largest City (WLC) is going to be produced entirely by freelance outsourcers. The WLD is a great product, and was largely written by freelance authors as well. However the product was compiled and edited in house by respected members of the game community, so quality was maintained. I run the WLD and can attest that its a fantastic piece of work.

Hearing that the WLC is going to be done entirely outside of the company and then marketed through them makes me nervous. It's going to be another high dollar prodcut but this time without the known quality controls that made WLD so fantastic. I realize that not everyone agrees with me that the price tag on WLD was worthwile, but thats not my point here. Does it make anyone else nervous that WLC is being produced outside of AEG?

Not really, no. Unless there are other out of house products they have done I have no idea what the quality is going to be. And since I don't have anything to base it on, I'm not going to start claiming the sky is falling. It could be better the WLD, it could suck worse then anything we have seen to date. But without any evidence to base a speculation on, i see no reason to worry about it.

I agree with Crothian. AEG is smart enough to know how to produce a good product, and I presume that they are smart enough to know how to find an hire talented writers.

I speak from experience when I say that writing a city is not easy. I helped write Bluffside, and I can tell you that it is a TON of work.

I love the WLD myself, even though I have noticed many grammatical/spelling errors within the pages. I sent them an email basically offering to proofread the WLC for a finished copy, but I haven't heard anything in response. Perhaps I'm a bit of an anal-retentive, but it irritates me to no end when something as beautiful as the WLD is marred by mispellings and the like.

I was a big ol' fan of the Waterdeep boxed set back in th' day so hearing about WLC made my ears prick up. I'll be interested in seeing it. If the price tag to usability ratio is right I might even buy it. ;)

Since I have absolutely no expectations for the WLC (even though I will undoubtedly purchase it), it's hard to be "nervous" about it.

Unlike the WLD, which was a product I had wanted for 25 years or so, I have had no such desire for the WLC, even though it sounds like a cool idea.

*shrug*

I prefer dungeon adventures much more than city adventures, so all I'm looking for in a city product is what services are available in the city, who are the proprietors of those services, and what do those services cost. I may build an introductory-style adventure around this information, but basically these type of people send the adventurers out of town to explore, or are available to buy and sell things from and to them.

Actually, I prefer City settings more than Dungeon settings, so I'm looking forward to WLC even more than WLD. So, does this news bother me? No, not really.

And sure, I noticed some spelling/grammar errors in WLD, but not so much that it marred my enjoyment of the product. (Mongoose, I'm looking at you!)

I think it'll be fine. AEG does decent stuff. Sure some things will slip through the cracks but in the end, we'll drop some nasty amount of cash on it and then punish our friends with it.

I intend to make a group of high school kids suffer.

I agree, AEG does tend to do some pretty decent work (wish they had done more with the Farscape license though..*grumble*). I'll give WLC a good look over and decide if I need it for my game. As for WLD, I'm going to wait to see what WotC is going to do with Undermountain before I buy it. I'd sure love to find some one around here running it though, sounds like it would be a lot of fun to play through.
