In order to grapple someone you have to reach into their square to grab them. This triggers an AoO even if you are 10' away since your hands/arms are closer. So, yes it will trigger an AoO and if the character hits the grapple attempt fails. Though it won't work so well for a Fire Giant, he can try to grapple an mage type with -20 (which gives him a +5 total) and end up only grappling him with the one hand he is grabbing with.
