It does feel / seem like an extended version of WW I, with a 1920s detective noir vibe to the settings city back home. The male population are all (angry / depressed) veterans of what seems to be a seemingly never-ending war which has swallowed generations...  Numerous books in the series and when the war droning on in the background is "won" things only get worse "at home".The armies involve universal conscription made possible by non-human workers (who can't be drafted by treaty) and war time economics. Vast armies, vast casualties.</blockquote>
