Volume is rarely the problem. Clarity, organization, cross-references, and other aids are what is critical. Currently, Fandom's on-line version of Cortex Prime is the gold standard for me. The core engine is clearly and concisely illustrated and is easy to absorb. From there there is a wealth of options you can use to build the kind of game you want to run, but they are well organized, cross-hyperlinked, searchable and designed to fit well with the core rules. I could build a ruleset with Cortex Prime that would be far crunchier than D&D 5e, but would be so much easier to pickup and to reference during play. I love playing and running 5e, but the books just are not that user friendly. I use D&D Beyond, but even it could be made far more user friendly. There are too many times where I'll search for a rule, only to have a long list of hits not at all relevant to what I'm looking for, even if I filter on "compendium". I end up navigating to the PHB, DMG, XGE or other relevant source book and looking it up via the hyperlinked table of contents. I'm preparing to run a MAGE the Ascension 20th edition campaign and it is a new system for me. Just horrible organization. Even simple things are a pain to look up, even with a searchable and bookmarked PDF. I would never spend the money on any hardcopy MAGE book. Interweaving lore and short stories throughout the book just makes it difficult to use as a rulebook.
