I answered Yes because I have come back to DND even when I play other games. But. My favorite game is Alternity. I have yet to find another game that has rank benefits that give game mechanics to allow an experienced fighter to win against a talented fighter. As I type that, I know I like modern games, and while I still say it's Alternity for me, I rarely get to play it. My group might indulge me every once in a while to play it but we go back to DND. Each year, Alternity becomes more and more dated, which makes me sad. I had this revelation about games. I knew that there were class based games and skill based games. Specific result games v dramatic result games. For those, I'm thinking about Star Wars d20 v FFG/Edge version. Where there is interpretation in the result. Fate obviously has it. My new revelation is games where you check if you succeed at a skill, which might include grades of success, and games where you do what you want to do and then the check is to see how well you accomplished it this time in these circumstances. Daggerheart and Outgunned, neither of which have I played and I only got Outgunned today but have read the resolution mechanic. I think Draw Steel is supposed to do this as well. As someone else said, no more wasted turns. Players always feel that they did something. I like that concept. As for board games, I think Red Dragon Inn and Pandemic are ones I have played most recently and most. I like Betrayal at house on the Hill (Baldur's Gate) due to the betrayal mechanic. The problem with me and board games is that some of the more complex games, that I would be interested to play and own some (complex to me), require four or five people. At that point, I would rather play an RPG, since it's my RPG groups that would play that kind of board game. Especially when there is a lot of setup for the board game and I don't play them enough not to refer to the rules while playing. ETA: The thing I have learned about myself is that I like my fantasy games to play like super hero games and have the good guys cut down a lot of bad guys. At the same time, I want my modern, near future, and future games to have mechanics that make guns deadly. I don't know why. I did find I could tweak Alternity to do fantasy mostly well, since it was made for modern to future games. Thanks for the discussion!
