The other issue, when you're into a fantasy or SF setting, is there's a lot of ways to get around the idea of MOD. After all, a single ship armed with Von Neuman style constructors drops into a solar system, seeds several asteroids and within X time, there's a fleet and entire supply chain in that star system. And the original Seed ship is the size of a potato. Never minding the truly weird things you can start doing when you can start telling Physics to go have a seat in the corner. Gravitational lenses aiming massive solar flares at a planet. Various other weird and terrifying ideas. Until you define the baselines of a given setting, there's no real answer to be made here. Are we talking something like the Expanse where technology is advanced but, still within the bounds (ignoring the aliens for a moment) of what we understand about physics? Or is it Star Trek and it might as well be magic. Star Trek has Borg Cubes, but, given the technology of the borg, why would they bother? Much better to use the Tyrannid strategy of coming in on little cat feet, converting segments of the population and then taking over.
