Ah, the first three Archons here in St. Louis I had a blast, they had a long running Find the Rod of Seven Parts adventure that we played every year. Then they quit that one year and we played a game that had 12th-13th level PC's, and this was 1e mind you, that were kind of silly. I played a Fighter that wore plate mail armor that was painted like a penguin. And we battled smurfs. It was an impossible adventure, since the Smurfs were mega tough and the scenario didn't leave much chance of avoiding confrontation with Papa Smurf who was a high level magic user/cleric. When we were all being slaughtered I tried to jump in a lake and swim away like a penguin since I had the penguin armor. They didn't let me so I died too. That was bad becuase I was ready for the next part of the Rod of Many Parts game and it was a little too silly. Then we were playing FASA's Star Trek RPG. The judge was using his home campaign stuff. We had a ship with 8 warp engines, triple back up shields, and GENESIS device torpedos. Half the group were the DM's players and the rest were us stunned strangers. So the ship was more powerful than the Klingon fleet and could probably wipe the Borg out in an hour. This was real monte haul ST gaming! We ran into some kind of space ship, and the captain had half the crew beam over while the rest of us sat there and listened to them play. The adventure ran out of time thankfully before we really did ANYTHING beyond make a few skill checks for our sensors. That was the WORST ever. Then I find out that the Star Trek Tactial Combat simulator game is going to be run by the SAME PERSON!!! He had nothing prepared. He gave us a book of ships and told us to pick one and we would have a team deathmatch. That was bad, he used a ton of house rules, just like in his ST:RPG session, and there was no real plot to the game. It thankfully ended before we could blow up everyone and I've never been back to a con since. But I'm going to Archon this year and hopefully I'll run into some good DM's. I'll finally get the chance to play 3e, but hopefully they don't just run Living Greyhawk games. I'm really praying that someone is running a 1e or basic game as well.
