The only big save he ever made was the one he wanted to fail: When he had enough of the character and wanted to kill himself (which never worked, though the DM was being difficult there), the DM finally took pity on the poor player and sent a Cosmic Flash of Death down at the blackguard. And the blackguard made his save. Evasion.
